Viewing and Responding to Advertisements

Over the next few lessons, you will be looking at a variety of advertisements.

The following questions should assist you to analyse the choices made by the advertiser and allow you to speculate on how effective each advertisement is in getting across it's message. In your answers aim to create a response that is well structured, has depth and utilises supportive evidence from the stimulus.

Questions:
1. Provide a brief description of what you see in this advertisement.

2. Explain what you think the purpose of this advertisement is. Support your answer by referring directly to the stimulus.

3. What sort of audience do you think this advertisement is aimed at? Support your answer by referring directly to the stimulus.
4. Why do you think the creator of this advertisement has chosen to use particular graphic features? Consider things like pictures used, colours, size, etc. Explain your answer in depth.

5. Why do you think the creator of this advertisement has chosen to use particular language features? Explain your answer in depth.

6. Do you think the advertisement achieves its purpose? Explain and support your answer.

Film vs Written Text

For many years people have debated whether it is better to watch a film or read the original text.

This can be quite a hot topic of conversation for many individuals and it is one that we are going to have a look at by utilising an interpretation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare is long considered to be one of the greatest playwrites of all time and his work has been reproduced time and time again. Australian film maker Baz Lurhmann is one of many individuals who has adapted the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet. Over the next few lessons we are going to look at what makes this film such a popular adaptation of this centuries old story.

Firstly, you need to consider what you already know about the story of Romeo and Juliet. Even though you may never have read the play, like most individuals, you may already be familiar with what the story is about. On your blog, write down as many things that you already know about the play, or that you think the play may be about.

Also, you need to write what your thoughts are prior to watching the film, i.e Do you think you will enjoy it and why? Or, do you think it will be completely awful and you wish you weren't being forced to watch it? Whatever your opinion may be at this point, you need to explain the reasoning behind your answer. We will look back at these interpretations after we have finished watching the film.

Looking beyond the words: an introduction to visual literacy

This site will consist of a variety of activities and sources that will make up our final unit for English Communications.

In Term 4 we will be looking at the importance of visual literacy - your ability to look at a stimulus piece and understand not just the message behind the words (assuming there are any) but also the meaning/messages behind the pictures, etc that may be used in the piece. From there you can get a clear understanding for what the overall impact of the piece may be.

The reason visual literacy is such an important skill to develop is that all day, everyday you are being bombarded with information that comes involves verbal and non-verbal communication. Advertising campaigns, songs, films, television programs, etc all rely on both visual and language based elements. In order to be a wise consumer of this information you need to be able to look beyond the face value of these pieces.

Throughout the unit we will look at a number of different sources, from catalogues through the feature films to try and understand why people are often drawn in at a greater level from a piece that has visual elements rather than simply written/spoken text.
